Gianluca Corno (Italy)
Aquatic Microbial Ecology
Institute of Ecosystem Study Verbania
Gianluca Corno works on ecology of microbes, mostly by studying interactions between organisms, species, and populations both in experimentally controlled systems and natural environments. He uses microbes as model organisms to test general ecological theories (community response to natural stressors, interactions prey-predators, competition and/or cooperation between species, resistance and resilience of microbial communities). He tries to define trends and ecological models to apply the ecological theory to concrete problems associated with bacteria (mostly in waters, but also in soils and human gut), including microbial blooms, antibiotic resistance, and biodiversity conservation. He is a co-founder of SItEMICRO (Italian Society of Ecology – Microbial Ecology Section) and he is an editor of the SItEMICRO Newsletter and webmaster of the website. And he is a member of different national and international associations in ecology and aquatic microbiology.
