Yoichi Kamagata (Japan)
Department of Bioproduction Research Institute
National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology
Kamagata has provided consistent breakthroughs in the isolation and characterization of important but very difficult to culture bacteria and archaea which is refreshing in an era where microbial discovery has been dominated by the less revealing sequence-based descriptions. He has focused on microbes that are major players in ecological systems, including those in anaerobic digestors, sediments, rice paddies and pollutant degraders. He is also a gifted speaker not for only his clarity of science but his challenging ideas and clever use of humor. He published 207 papers including 35 in AEM, 6 in JB, 5 in ISME Journal and 2 in Nature Communications. His recognition as a global leader in microbial ecology is evidenced by his appointment to ISME-Journal’s editorial board since it was founded and has been an invited Symposium speaker at ISME meetings. He is also a recognized leader of microbiology in Japan as he serves as Editor-in-Chief of Microbes and Environment, the publication of the Japanese Society of Microbial Ecology. He, as group leader and recently Director, supervised over 40 post-docs and contributes to education at Hokkaido and Tokyo Universities.
